![]() There’s a 99% Invisible episode called “Curb Cuts” that I really adore and it’s all about accessible design. (Image: Jacob Vander Ende)īeyond that, this version of Assault Android Cactus really goes the extra mile in every way. Notice how the exact same boss has different dialogue for every character. …you balance something by making everything cool and appealing and this is something Assault Android Cactus does extremely well. As a developer myself, I know that you balance something by making everything cool and appealing and this is something Assault Android Cactus does extremely well. I love the continuous fire laser and personality of Starch, but Coral’s shotgun and vaporizing sphere of death secondary are great, too, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Aubergine’s incredible buzz saws that you move around by holding and releasing the fire button. It’s incredibly rare that I play a twin-stick shooter and don’t immediately pick a favorite, but I really can’t in this game. Starch, on the other hand, clearly has a few glitches and shouts things like “Tiny robots!” when you pick up firepower or “Last time I had this much fun I got deactivated!” when you hit a long combo streak. Cactus, for instance, is a loose cannon, aloof security officer, while Holly is a timid bookkeeper. ![]() Every character feels unique, from the feel of their weapons to the way they talk. (Image: Jacob Vander Ende / KnowTechie)Īll of this is pretty standard fare for twin-stick gameplay, but Assault Android Cactus shines in the fact that it does everything well. Assault Android Cactus is filled with this level of detailed polish. One of the levels turns the lights out on you and gives you a flashlight, which is how you learn that all of the enemies have unique glowing parts to them. You start out with a handful and unlock someone new after each world, which consists of several levels and a boss. In it, you control one of several characters from a cast of misfit androids and you go up against a rogue AI that’s taken control of a cargo ship and all of its non-android mechanized crew.Įach character has a unique personality, manifest in their weapon loadout, appearance, voice, and unique dialogue throughout the game. The most succinct way I can summarize this game is this: Assault Android Cactus is a twin-stick shooter that does everything right. The second hardest part about writing this review is that I have to come up with critiques of this game, for which I find myself utterly grasping at straws.Īssault Android Cactus is a twin-stick shooter of the caliber you don’t see often and the version for Switch is the definitive experience for it. It's clearly a bug that passed because several people finished the game with very few S+ on the Xbox leaderboard. The hardest thing about writing this review for Assault Android Cactus is that I have to stop playing Assault Android Cactus to write it. If not, you can always do S+ again and press next level.īut it's unlikely that a person who attempted several times a level to S+ it will go to next level. It doesn't affect the achievement though.īut I noticed that if you press NEXT LEVEL instead of coming back to the main menu it usually registers. Didn't use any of the extra options unless it was to unlock some achievement. I also used Cactus for all of the infinity mode and boss mode achievements.No. Do you have any EX options turned on? Some of them void rankings.Īlso, I personally used Cactus for every single level except the last two levels where I used Starch. I have some S+ on all levels of the first episode, with multiple androids in the same levels, and the stupid leaderboard says I have zero S+. Is the S+ leaderboard not tracking for some reason? Because you can only change your weapon when the cooldown hits the 75% (I only used this cooldown trick on just one level of the entire game: the last one). ![]() Also, because of this, you should not heat up the secondary weapon and then wait for it to cooldown. ![]() So take advantage of this, because a lot of times this will save you from restarting the level again. While you change weapon with, you will be invincible for a little more than one second to the enemy's lasers and bullets. These two are the only characters I used for the entire game, I never touched the others. For boss fights use Cactus (Or Starch, but I prefer Cactus because of her flamethrower). The only tips that I can give you are these:įirst: Use Holly for ALL the levels except boss fights. I've played the game for less than 12 hours and I only got some problems on the last two zones (Even though, the real pain between the two was the last one). I started this game yesterday and I've just unlocked the achievement. ![]()
